Why Umalas Is Bali’s Best-Kept Secret

When people plan a trip to Bali, they usually hear about Seminyak or Canggu first. What a lot of visitors don’t realise is there’s a quiet pocket sitting right between the two: Umalas, one of the best places on the island if you want convenience and calm in the same stay.

I’ve been coming to Bali for more than 43 years, and when it came time to open a hotel I knew I didn’t want to be in the middle of a touristy strip. I wanted somewhere green and genuinely peaceful, while still close to everything Bali’s known for. That’s exactly why Bloomfield Bali is in Umalas.

We’re less than ten minutes from Pantai Batu Beling beach, with easy access to Canggu’s surf and cafes or Seminyak’s restaurants and nightlife, minus the traffic and the noise. New roads and proper footpaths have made the area even easier to get around, so you can walk to nearby cafes, shops, and wellness studios without any trouble.

Nine years in, we’ve built real relationships with local businesses around Umalas and further afield, in Uluwatu and Ubud too. These aren’t paid placements, they’re places I still go to myself and recommend to friends and family: Satoshi for Japanese-Italian fusion and a proper wine cellar, Leon French Brasserie for old-school French dining, Tacos Aqui for Mexican done well, Anatomy Pilates & Yoga, Manik Hair Salon, Moii Aesthetic Clinic just across the road, and a few trusted healers and tarot readers for guests who want that side of Bali too.

If you’re weighing up where to stay on your next trip, Umalas is worth a proper look. And if you’re already booked in and want a steer on where to eat or what’s worth your time nearby, get in touch, that’s exactly what the concierge side of what I do is for.
